![]() The dust had barely settled on Eros before I was trying to buy the spacecraft. My efforts to do so continued for the first few months of the year 2001. Before the year was over, however, I had decided that I probably couldn't buy it. Either nobody was competent to sell it or nobody was taking me seriously. Therefore, I waited and thought about it for a while. By early 2005, I decided that I'd waited long enough to reasonably presume that the spacecraft had been abandoned by its former owner. I made one last attempt to buy the spacecraft but, primarily, I began the process of claiming it. I stated the basis for my claim in two documents: NEAR Spacecraft, also known as NEAR Shoemaker Declaration and Certificate of Ownership and NEAR Spacecraft, also known as NEAR Shoemaker Final Notice and Declaration. My process of acquiring ownership of the NEAR Spacecraft is shown in my Acquisition of Ownership document. The letters and other documents shown there provide a record of my process of claiming ownership of the NEAR Spacecraft. The most important of the documents are the two mentioned in the previous paragraph. I sent a copy of the first one, by certified mail, to the previous owner of the spacecraft. That owner failed to object. I also had both documents published in the legal notices section of the White Mountain Independent. I didn't receive any objections at all. Please be aware that my contact information is obsolete on most of my documents regarding the NEAR Spacecraft. My current contact information is available on the front page of this website.
